Midfest - Walk to end Alzheimer's interview

At this year’s MidFest, held in Wareham Hall, Margaret Hayden, Manager of the Walk to End Alzheimer’s, joined Jimmy Coffman and Dawson Wagner for an engaging interview. Hayden shared insights about the Alzheimer’s Association's mission, ongoing efforts to combat the disease, and the exciting events surrounding this year’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s.

The Mission of the Alzheimer’s Association

Margaret Hayden emphasized that the Alzheimer’s Association is dedicated to providing care, support, and research for those affected by Alzheimer’s disease. Their ultimate goal is to find a cure. Through various fundraising initiatives like the Walk to End Alzheimer’s and other community events such as a pickleball tournament, the organization raises awareness and funds for this critical cause.

Hayden expressed optimism about recent advancements in Alzheimer’s treatment. She highlighted that there are now two treatments available for early-stage patients and a blood test for genetic markers—an incredible leap forward compared to previous years when diagnosis was only possible post-mortem. “I fully believe we can get to that cure in our lifetime,” Hayden stated passionately.

The Walk to End Alzheimer’s

This year’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s is set to take place on Saturday, October 5th, at Manhattan City Park. The event will begin at 8:00 AM with venue access at the Wefald Pavilion. The opening ceremony, featuring a meaningful flower ceremony symbolizing participants’ connections to Alzheimer’s disease, will start at 9:30 AM. The walk itself will kick off at 10:00 AM.

Participants can register in advance online at alzwalkmanhattan.org or on-site the morning of the event. Registration is encouraged as it helps organizers prepare for the flower ceremony, where different flower colors represent various personal connections to the disease.

Community Involvement and Fundraising Success

Hayden expressed gratitude for the strong community support behind the walk. Over 300 participants have already registered, including teams from Sigma Kappa Sorority—whose chapters nationwide have raised $800,000 this year toward their $1 million goal—as well as K-State Baseball and other family and corporate teams.

The fundraising goal for this year’s Manhattan walk is $100,000, with over 60% already achieved. Hayden praised local partnerships and sponsors for their contributions and highlighted how events like MidFest help amplify awareness about Alzheimer’s.

Resources for Those Affected by Alzheimer’s

In addition to organizing events, the Alzheimer’s Association provides vital resources for individuals and families dealing with the disease. Hayden reminded listeners about their 24/7 toll-free helpline staffed by master-level clinicians who offer guidance and support. The helpline can be reached at 802-723-900.

A Shared Commitment to Ending Alzheimer's

Margaret expressed her appreciation for being part of MidFest 2024 and emphasized how combining music celebrations with philanthropic efforts strengthens community bonds. “We’re here to make this a thing of the past,” she affirmed.
