Starbucks in Aggieville closes amid national strategy shift

Starbucks’ “Back to Starbucks” plan is brewing some big changes — and Aggieville just got

caught in the mix. CEO Brian Niccol announced the strategy earlier this fall, saying the company

would close hundreds of stores across the country to help recover from declining sales and to

phase out spaces that no longer work for customers or employees.

Niccol said, “During the review, we identified coffeehouses where we’re unable to create the

physical environment our customers and partners expect, or where we don’t see a path to

financial performance, and these locations will be closed.”

As a result, the analysis brought the Starbucks in Aggieville to an indefinite closure. However,

some in the community have applauded this corporate decision.

“It’s genuinely the worst spot for a Starbucks,” says K-State student Annalise Angel,

“especially with how much of a line Starbucks tends to get. I’ve almost been hit one or two

times, and I’ve almost hit somebody because they’ve stopped to get into the line that has

gone out onto the street. Genuinely the worst.”

Angel’s not alone — many have attested to the traffic concerns the store was causing. This might

have been a key factor in the decision to close, however Starbucks has not said anything about

this specific location beyond their original statement.

Though, other community members are sad to see it go. The Starbucks was nestled right between campus and Aggieville making it a go-to for many K-State students looking for a quick caffeine fix.

“I really enjoyed that Starbucks,” said resident hall community assistant Megan Graff. “The

baristas were always really nice to me, and I really liked going there to study. The only other

Starbucks on this side of town is the one over in Kramer, and it’s not a drive-thru, and I do appreciate a drive-thru coffee.”

So far, the Aggieville Business Association hasn’t addressed what may be moving into the

location.
