The energy was already electric backstage at Frog Wizard Festival when Cadence and Delaney sat down with Social Cinema, the rock band known for their infectious grooves and even better stage presence. Before they hit the alleyway for their performance, the band gave the pair a peek into their world—and it’s just as lively as their music.
Meet Social Cinema: Friends First, Band Second
Social Cinema isn’t just a band; they’re a group of friends who decided that playing together was way more fun than going solo. "We’ve been a band for, like, three years now," they shared, grinning. "We all met playing in different bands back in the day and just decided to start something new—and it’s been a blast."
Their mission? Make music that gets people dancing and smiling.
Even their name has a story with a wink "I saw it in an old newspaper headline and thought, ‘Hey, that would look cool on an album cover!'" Sometimes, the best ideas really do just pop out at you.
Why Frog Wizard Fest? "Because It’s a Vibe"
Asked why they returned to Downtown Manhattan for Frog Wizard Fest, the band’s answer was pure love. "We have so many memories here—friends went to college here, we’ve played in other bands, and last year’s set was one of our favorites." The alleyway stage, the friendly faces, and the small-town charm keep them coming back. "It’s beautiful here. I got here early and just drove around looking at all the houses. This place is gorgeous!” said Mari the background vocals and one of the guitarists.
Pre-Show Rituals: Jumping, Joking, and High Lifes
When it comes to getting pumped before a show, Social Cinema keeps things light and lively. Their drummer (Logan) is the designated jumper—literally bouncing around backstage as showtime approaches. For big gigs, the band gathers for a heartfelt "band prayer," dedicating the set to family or old friends. Otherwise, it’s all about hanging out, cracking jokes, and, as Griffin put it (jokingly), "I drink three High Lifes, and then I’m ready to go."
The Band Dynamic: Organized Chaos
Every band has roles, and Social Cinema’s are as fun as they are functional:
Austin (bass): The "band dad" and video guy.
Mari (keys/guitar/vocals): The "band mom," always ready with band-aids and wet wipes.
Griffin (guitar/vocals): The creative "problem" (mostly for being late).
Reid (guitar): The steady presence.
Logan (drums): The high-energy manager who keeps everyone on schedule.
Their secret sauce? "If we were all like me" said Logan, "it would not work. If we were all like Griffin, it would not work. But together, it just clicks."
Why Rock?
Because It’s Loud, Fun, and Real.
Rock music is in their DNA. "We all grew up on it, and I love the loudness—you can feel every instrument," they explained. "Plus, with five people in the band, it’s just a blast. There’s so much energy and chaos, but it’s the best kind."
The Best Parts: Friendship, Adventure, and Creative Chaos
Ask any member what they love most, and you’ll get a chorus of good vibes:
The genuine friendships and risk-taking.
The joy of touring together.
The creative process—especially recording and seeing songs come to life.
The thrill of live shows, where each member brings their own flavor to the stage.
"It’s a little chaotic, but it’s so much fun," they laughed. "Traveling with this bunch is always an adventure—we hike, eat, and explore everywhere we go."
Rock Icons and Inspirations
Their musical heroes are as eclectic as their personalities:
Logan shouts out the gritty survival spirit of Black Flag and The Ramones.
Reid looks up to Paul Weller for his style and songwriting.
Griffin is inspired by Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong and Arctic Monkeys’ Alex Turner.
Mari loves Saint Vincent and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Austin finds inspiration in the hard-working bands they tour with, saying "They make us want to up our game."
As the interview wrapped up, Social Cinema shared some advice for their friends and anyone looking to start a rock band.
"Just have fun with your friends and don’t be afraid to be a little chaotic.”
