Manhattan golfer Charlie Haney wins championship at Pebble Beach

For Manhattan High School golfer Charlie Haney, playing at one of golf’s most famous courses went from a bucket-list dream to a championship experience.
Haney teamed up with PGA professional Rory Sabbatini on Sept. 21 to win the boys’ title at the PURE Insurance Championship at Pebble Beach in California. Haney shot a final-round 59 to finish 22-under-par, securing the victory by one stroke.
Haney said the experience of playing at Pebble Beach was something he and his family would remember forever.
“It was amazing just getting to experience that, play two rounds of golf there was really special,” Haney said. “And then winning it was just an amazing experience.”
Despite the major accomplishment, Haney did not spend long celebrating. With more tournaments ahead, he quickly returned his attention to improving his game and reaching his future goals.
“I did take a couple days to enjoy the win, but also kind of noticed, like, hey, I got a tournament two weekends ahead, so preparing for that now,” Haney said.
One of Haney’s biggest goals is bringing a state championship back to Manhattan. Last season, he finished runner-up at the Class 6A state tournament after losing in a playoff.
“I got a couple goals that I want to achieve," Haney said. "One of them would be get a state championship for Manhattan."
Haney said he also hopes to win the Kansas Amateur Championship after previously finishing second. Beyond high school, he said he is looking forward to continuing his golf career at the University of Mississippi.
“I’m really excited to get down there,” Haney said. “I’m really excited to see where my golf game can go when I get there.”
