The Sounds of Many brought a surge of energy and nostalgia to Switch Wicked for the first Frog Wizard Concert Series performance, followed by an exclusive green room interview with Wildcat 91.9 hosts Derek Foster and Brody Beckman.
The band reflected on the significance of returning to their hometown, with the lead singer, Lukas Huginin noting, "It’s been nine years and three days since my very first show here in Manhattan, Kansas, which was at Sisters of Sound," giving a shout out to the local record store.
Their performance featured a mix of original tracks and classic rock covers, and the band pointed to influences such as Cream and Led Zeppelin. When discussing how they structure their sets, a member said,
"I try to think of it like a roller coaster... the songs tell a story, but I hope the order and the emotions that are brought forward through a set, hopefully those also help resonate with folks as well".
The conversation focused partly on the making of their EP, "Ishtar Wears High Heels," a project born from experimentation and collaboration. One member explained, "About six years ago, I took a couple tabs of acid... I was watching this documentary on... Mesopotamia. And they were talking about Ishtar, this goddess of war and fertility. And it just got beamed into my skull—Ishtar wears high heels! I want to do something with that name." The band worked with a San Diego-based studio for mixing and mastering, yielding "light years better" sound quality.
Reflecting on their creative process, another member noted, "I think it’s important for every member of your band to take ownership of what they are in. They need to really invest in being a member and being a part of the creative process. Otherwise, that’s how you get burnt out".
The band also recounted onstage antics, like audience members joining the finale and unexpected equipment failures. "It’s pretty common... somebody hits my guitar cable and it comes unplugged and I’m like, oh, there goes my guitar... the only good thing a wireless rig would be for," lead singer, Lukas joked.
The Sounds of Many are set to continue their tour across multiple cities in the Midwest this fall.
