Fresh off the stage at the Frog Wizard Concert Series, the five-piece band Krysis sat down with Cadence Brier at Wildcat 91.9 to give an exclusive look into their collaborative dynamic, their roots, and the massive plans they have coming up—including a trip to Nashville's famed Castle Studios.
The dynamic five-piece lineup is comprised of: Brad (Vocals, Guitar, Keys), Lance (Vocals, Guitar,
Keys), Carson (Drums, Keys), Houston (Bass), and the newest member, Dylan (Organ, Guitar, Aux Percussion).
From Ashes to All-Star Lineup
The band’s story began when core members Brad and Lance broke away from an earlier project, realizing they had a new, shared vision for their sound. As Brad put it, they formed out of the "ashes of an old band" and quickly built the new foundation.
After recruiting bassist Houston and drummer Carson, the group solidified its current form just months ago with the addition of multi-instrumentalist Dylan.
The result is a group where every idea is a shared one. "We all kind of mash our heads together until something comes out," Lance explained. "It's all of us, it's not just one." This spirit of total collaboration ensures that the final product truly belongs to Krysis.
The Sound Behind the Synergy
Krysis’s sound is a vibrant mix of classic progressive rock complexity, alternative punch, and indie sensibilities, largely defined by the band’s eclectic tastes:
Prog Rock Core: The band shares a deep appreciation for progressive rock giants. Dylan cited Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, and Rush, while Houston (Bass) pointed to Red Hot Chili Peppers, Yes, and Rush as foundational. Carson (Drums) holds drummers like Mike Portnoy and Neil Peart (of Rush) in high regard and is newly obsessed with the progressive band Haken.
Alternative Edge: The band’s softer side is influenced by the '90s and '00s. Brad (Vocals/Guitar) enjoys 90s alternative like Weezer and Foo Fighters, blending it with an appreciation for jazz legends like Frank Sinatra. Lance (Vocals/Guitar) also cited indie rock darlings like The Strokes and Arctic Monkeys.
The Power of the Bass: As a tribute to the instrument, Houston, the bassist, summed up the band's collective appreciation for complex rhythmic foundations by affirming, "You gotta love the bass player."
The Three-Finger Rule: Musical Chairs on Stage
If you’ve seen Krysis perform, you’ll know their live shows are anything but static. Beyond their musical prowess, the band is known for constantly swapping instruments mid-set.
"We’re switching, we’re moving around," said Brad, emphasizing the entertainment value. Because the band writes music using various instruments—from piano and guitar to bass—whoever crafted the core idea often takes the lead on that track, forcing the rest of the members to shift roles. This approach results in a highly energized and dynamic performance that keeps the audience guessing.
The Big Announcement: Nashville Calling
While the band recently celebrated the release of their newest single (recorded during a transitional three-piece phase), their sights are now set on their biggest venture yet.
Krysis announced they are heading to Nashville in December to record live for the very first time as a complete five-piece unit! They will be tracking at Castle Studios, a major step up that promises to capture the full, complex energy of their latest lineup.
With their unique blend of collaborative songwriting and on-stage dynamism, Krysis is clearly ready to take their sound from the local scene to the national spotlight. We can’t wait to hear what comes out of those Nashville sessions!
Hitting the Road in the Midwest
While the band is busy preparing for their upcoming recording session in Nashville, they are also finalizing plans to take their dynamic live show outside of the Wichita and Manhattan area.
Brad confirmed the band is planning a regional tour for March or April, focusing on expanding their reach across the Midwest. Fans can expect to see Krysis in Kansas, Oklahoma, and Missouri, with tentative dates being added in Iowa and Nebraska.
