Good Kid is a Toronto-based indie band who have been making music since 2015. The band consists of Nick (vocalist), Jon (drummer), Michael (bassist), David, and Jacob (guitarists). The band was formed in 2015 as a hobby while all the members were studying at the University of Toronto.
As a couple years went by, the band would release two EPs (projects with a smaller amount of music than a studio album), titled Good Kid and Good Kid 2, and released in 2018 & 2020 respectively. Due to their rise in popularity via Today’s digital era of media, by 2022, they were taking part in sold-out shows across the continent. Good Kid 3 and Good Kid 4 would be released in 2023 and 2024, as the band’s popularity began to skyrocket. They also released a cover of Laufey’s hit song “From The Start,” which would turn out to be the band’s most popular song. But impressively, they released a large volume of music and garnered a large audience, all without an official studio album.
In 2025, Good Kid would release two singles, “Wall” and “Rift,” before finally announcing their first official album, Can We Hang Out Sometime?, with a release date of April 3rd, 2026. Two more singles (“Cicada” and “Eastside”) would come out leading up to the project’s release.
Would I have considered myself a Good Kid fan ahead of this album rollout? Not necessarily. I knew one of their songs beforehand, “Mimi’s Delivery Service.” A great song. I liked all the singles going in, including Rift. So when midnight came, I was excited.
I think Good Kid has a very distinct sound to their music, which is good to have in today’s day and age in music, and it is prevalent throughout the entire album. However, this album manages to keep all the songs unique at the same time. No song truly sounds like another, and that’s a skill too. Nick’s vocals shine throughout this album, especially with a lot of the melody choices he makes in songs like “Ghost Keeper” and “Tornado,” which end up being some of my favorite songs on the entire album. The chorus on both of those songs just find a way to get stuck in your head for the rest of the day.
To be able to have songs that are lower tempo, like “Tea Leaves” and “Ghost Keeper,” and also have their upbeat, typical sound like “Wall” and “Cicada,” is something we haven’t seen much of from the band prior, as most of their songs are fast with only a handful of exceptions. It is a very welcome change.
I also am just a massive fan of a short album, and with this one only being 10 tracks and taking right around half an hour to listen, I’d say it’s the perfect length for an album of its nature.. You can listen to the whole album over and over again. I listened to it 3 straight times, and I didn’t even notice because of their great songmaking ability and how concise the album is. And, at its core, there are some great lyrics and concepts within all the songs, but it’s so easy to just fall in love with the sound.
In totality, I think this is a great album and an album that came out at a great time because I think it’ll be fantastic music for the summer. I recommend it to all who enjoy indie rock, and truly to those who seek out music that makes you feel good. And if you wish to dig deeper into the meanings of the songs, I urge you to, because there are some gems in there (listen to Tornado, the lyrics are phenomenal), but I’ll let that be your decision. Regardless of that, I can happily say Good Kid put out a great album for your upcoming summer drives.
