Band Feature: The Manhattan Project
The Kansas music scene has been filled with plenty of great bands, making it one of the better music scenes in the country. On Friday, Sept. 18, I, as part of my show, The Evening Drive, had the honor of having ¾ of the members of Manhattan's own band, The Manhattan Project. Ella, Parker and Keaton sat down on the show and, for about 22 minutes, had some really great conversation.
The band came together through the K State “Jam Cat Collective” organization on campus as well as some mutual friendships, and they released their debut single “Masquerade” back in April of this year. As crazy as it would seem, they actually recorded the song within the Sound Studio located in Hale Library, right here on campus. They even went as far as bringing their own drums into the studio to help put together the song.
Their upcoming show on Saturday, Sept. 19 isn’t their first performance in MHK this year. Earlier in the semester, they headlined the first of the Frog Wizard Concert Series at Switch Wicked, a gig they very much enjoyed. On Saturday, The Manhattan Project will be playing at The Press alongside fellow bands: Headline Rivals, Radkey, Dirty Kings and Agga Dagga. Towards the end of the interview, I asked them about their goals as a band and as musicians. Ella said she wanted to gain more confidence, Keaton said he wanted the band to make more original music and get it out onto streaming platforms and Parker spoke about a dream performance in Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado.
