By. Luke Lazarczyk K-State overcomes 13-point deficit to remain perfect in Big 12 play. Newly-ranked No. 4 Kansas State women’s basketball found themselves in a hole. Still without star center Ayoka Lee, the Wildcats trailed by as much as 13 points against the No. 13 Baylor Bears. Nevertheless, K-State prevailed to an 8-0 Big 12 record with the 58-55 victory. Guards Serena Sundell and Gabby Gregory and forward Eliza Maupin each scored 16 points in the comeback. The game was always a battle for the Wildcats.
The first quarter saw Baylor frequently score easily without an interior presence for K-State. Sundell chipped away at the Bears, scoring nine points in the first quarter to stay alive. Sundell went scoreless in the second, including suffering an injury to miss the rest of the quarter. Down 19-15 after the first, the Wildcats were held scoreless for over eight minutes, ended by a 3-pointer from Jaelyn Glenn. The Bears got up by as much as 13 with multiple and-1 layups, but a late burst from Gregory marked the score at 39-30 into the half. Maupin, receiving more playing time with the new need for size, scored eight points and grabbed six rebounds in the half. K-State’s defense exploded in the second half after its early struggles. The Wildcats held Baylor to 23.1% shooting in each the third and fourth quarter. K-State regained the lead for the first time with 7:19 left off a Maupin corner 3-pointer. The lead switched back-and-forth until Sundell scored a layup to go up 56-55 with 2:32. From then on out, K-State held Baylor scoreless, not allowing a point in the last four minutes and 34 seconds. A flurry of wild plays in the final minute ended with Glenn blocking the final chance for the Bears as the buzzer sounded. The wild night ended in another statement win for the Wildcats, moving their record to 2-0 without their All-American center.
