As the current terms for SGA winds down, the spotlight turns to the upcoming Student Governing
Association (SGA) elections at Kansas State University. The SGA presidential candidates, Lauren Wolter and Christian Pena, face off in a debate on Thursday, February 19th, from 11:30 AM
to 12:30 PM in the Union Courtyard. This event provides an opportunity for students to learn
about the candidates' platforms and initiatives.
Senators Katie Zachgo and Noah Perry, who are part of the Elections Promotions Commission,
emphasized the importance of being an informed voter. They encouraged students to visit the
K-State SGA website to review the candidates' information, including their pictures, majors, and
statements on why they are running for office.
The Role and Responsibilities of SGA Senators
Senators like Zachgo and Perry play a vital role in the SGA, introducing legislation, voting on
bills, and allocating funds. As representatives of their respective colleges, they work to address
the needs and concerns of their constituents.
While the Senate Operations Committee handles the day-to-day maintenance of the organization, senators can also propose initiatives and bills to improve campus life. This includes overseeing the student services fee, which funds essential resources like the Rec Center, Cat's Cupboard, and legal services. Experiences and Insights from SGA Senators Zachgo and Perry shared their personal journeys into SGA, highlighting the positive culture shift and increased student involvement they have witnessed over time. They also discussed the challenges and debates that can arise within the Senate Operations Committee, where they work to ensure the smooth functioning of the organization.
The Importance of Student Engagement
The discussion underscores the significant impact the SGA has on the student experience at
K-State. With control over substantial funding and decision-making power, the SGA's initiatives
and leadership can shape the campus in meaningful ways. By engaging in the electoral process
and staying informed about the candidates and their platforms, students can play a crucial role in determining the future direction of their university.
The upcoming SGA debate and elections present an opportunity for students to get involved and make their voices heard. By exercising their right to vote, students can help ensure that their
needs and priorities are represented within the SGA and, ultimately, on the K-State campus.
