A 'Vibrant' New Look and In-Depth Stories

The new issue of The Manhappenin’ Magazine is a departure from previous styles, focused on capturing the "vibrance" of Manhattan and K-State student life.

"Every single spread has a designated color," Fleischer explained, making it a very "bright" and "fun" issue to look at. The word "vibrance" was ultimately chosen as the theme to emphasize the great things happening in Manhattan and on campus, reflecting the interconnected community.

Key features highlighted in the issue include:

  • The Classy Cats: A main feature going "beyond just their uniform" to explore the dancers' majors, career aspirations, and inspirations outside of dance.

  • Humans of Manhattan: The return of a popular feature that tells little-known stories about people on and around campus, including women in male-dominated fields, students with alternative styles, and instructors at the recreation center.

  • The Male Loneliness Epidemic: A deeper, more meaningful story tackling the challenges of finding connection in the modern age, which Fleischer believes is insightful for all readers.

  • What They Don't Tell You About Turning 21: A lighthearted, relatable story about the costs and experiences associated with the milestone.

Fleischer noted that story ideas are generated through an initial pitch session where the large team compiles a list of 50-100 potential stories, ensuring a smooth and collaborative process for the reporters.

Inside the Magazine's Team and Operations

The magazine staff this year is its largest, with close to 35 students working together. Fleischer’s role as editor-in-chief is highly collaborative, overseeing all departments, providing support, and checking in with staff members on their work and personal well-being.

While the executive board is on salary and print staff are paid for their work, a major, exciting change is coming: The Manhappenin’ Magazine will be switching to an hourly pay structure next semester. This change will ensure that every single staff member gets compensated for all their work, including online content and attendance at meetings, making it a fairer system.

The magazine is completely free to readers and is funded through the Collegian Media Group (CMG) and its advertisement sales. Fleischer is grateful for the continued support from local Manhattan sponsors who make the publication possible.

Mark Your Calendars: The Release Party

The semester-long effort culminates in the highly anticipated release party, which Fleischer calls the best part of the whole process.

The details for the event are:

  • When: November 6th, 7–10 p.m.

  • Where: Johnny Kaw’s Yard Bar

  • Admission: 18+ from 7–9 p.m.; 21+ after 9 p.m. (Get there early!)

  • Dress Code: Attendees are encouraged to wear something bright to match the "vibrant" theme.

The party will feature:

  • Two live bands: The Sounds of Many and Woodridge (The Sounds of Many will even be taking magazines on tour with them!).

  • Vendors and Treats: MHK Vintage Flea, Outlet Drew’s (selling clothes), Eileen's Cookies, and Celsius.

  • Giveaways and Fun: A photo booth from Wing Productions, a neon-themed photo wall, and a shot glass giveaway.

Fleischer encourages everyone to stop by to celebrate the staff's hard work, grab a free copy of the magazine, and enjoy the great vibes.
