The Kansas State Women’s team had their first exhibition game tonight at Bramlage Stadium against the Fort Hays State Lady Tigers. The Wildcat’s last exhibition game against the Lady Tigers was in 2010 where the Wildcats crushed Fort Hays 91-25.
The game started great with senior Britney Chambers putting the first points on the board. Unfortunately the Wildcats lost their lead until there were six minutes left in the half when Ashia Woods scored bringing the Cats up 20-19.
K-State kept the lead for the remainder of the half going into halftime with a 30-26 lead over the Fort Hays Lady Tigers. By the end of the first half Ashia Woods, Brittany Chambers, and Brianna Craig were tied with 8 points each, but the top scorer of the game so far was Fort Hays’ number 40 Katie Lehman with 10.
Leading into the second half the Lady Tigers wanted to get their lead back bad, but K-State wasn’t going to give it up that easy. K-State maintained its lead well into the second half. With 10 minutes left in the game the Cats were winning 48-44, while Ashia Woods had the lead scoring spot with 13 points. Fort Hays never backed down and the Wildcats had to boost their defense to keep the Lady Tigers top scorer Katie Lehman production limited, Lehman completed the game with 16.
Kansas State was able to stay in the lead for the rest of the game and defeated Fort Hays State 68-57. Not exactly the blowout fans saw two years ago in 2010, but head coach Deb Patterson and the whole team fought hard and never lost determination.
A great way to start their season with a well deserved victory. Brittany Chambers ended the game with 17 points and Ashia Woods had 19. The Cats next game is Monday night at 7:00 against Washburn.
